A start-up led by the former OpenAI executive Kevin Weil says it has raised $215 million to challenge overseas contractors that make experimental drug compounds for pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
The company, Warp Sciences, announced the financing Oct. 22; Lightspeed Venture Partners led the round. Warp plans to combine synthetic chemists, artificial intelligence, and robots in a US medical contract research organization (CRO). Much of the labor-intensive work of making compounds to drug discovery has been outsourced to reduce-cost providers such as the Chinese firm WuXi AppTec.
