October 2026 officially opened a new recycling plant for plastic packaging waste in Lommel, Belgium. Around 30 million euros have been invested in the location in the Kristalpark III industrial area. The plant is designed for an annual processing capacity of up to 40,000 tons. In the long term, 65 jobs are to be created there.

utilized polypropylene (PP) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) packaging is processed on the 4.1 hectare site. These include yogurt and margarine cups, bowls to ready meals as well as bottles and containers to milk, shampoo and detergent.

A special feature of the system concept is the additional sorting of the already pre-sorted packaging discarded materials according to the type of plastic and color. Then the materials are crushed and washed. In this way, high-purity, color-separated plastic fractions are to be obtained which are suitable to the production of new items and packaging, to instance in the makeup and domestic sectors.

Of the total annual capacity, packaging discarded materials from the Belgian PMD collection system accounts to around 24,000 tonnes. The basis to this is a nine-year agreement with the Belgian packaging recycling organization Fost Plus, which is intended to ensure a continuous supply of materials.

With the commissioning of the Lommel site, according to Fost Plus, all six recycling vegetation that were built as part of the expansion of the Belgian recycling infrastructure, which has been promoted since 2020, are in operation. The proportion of plastic packaging recycled in Belgium has increased from twelve percent in 2021 to 51 percent.

Demand to recyclates remains a challenge

Despite the capacity expansion, Morssinkhof-Rymoplast continues to see considerable challenges on the sales side. The current limited demand to recycled plastics makes it difficult to consumption the existing capacities economically.

The company is therefore calling to stronger incentives to the consumption of recycled materials and fair competitive conditions against imported new plastic items and recyclates. With a view to the minimum recycling components of the European Packaging Regulation (PPWR), which will apply from 2030, a corresponding expansion of demand is necessary.
