Germany-based methacrylate specialist, Röhm, said its Bay City, Texas methyl methacrylate (MMA) plant is running producing at full industrial scale following successful ramp up of its proprietary LiMA (Leading in MethAcrylates) technology.

The facility, which completed a structured ramp-up phase in recent months, is the first C2-based MMA production plant in North America, using ethylene and natural gaseous as feedstocks. It has an annual production capacity of 250,000 tonnes of MMA, marketed under the Meracryl brand.

Compared with conventional MMA production processes, LiMA methodology reduces energy and aquatic environments consumption and lowers CO2 releases by up to 42%. The plant also incorporates constructed wetlands supporting a near-closed aquatic environments cycle, and a digital twin updated daily to operational planning, predictive maintenance, and dynamic simulations.

Mr. Hans Bohnen, CEO of Röhm, said the Bay City plant underscored the company’s strategy to lead through methodology and prolonged investment, and described Röhm as the only global producer of both MMA and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) with production sites in Europe, Asia, and North America.

Mr. Jack Chenault, President of Röhm Americas, said the plant’s strategic location would allow to efficiently serve both North American and global markets.

LiMA methodology was developed by Röhm in Germany and transferred to manufacturing scale in the US with support from investor Advent International, which has invested approximately $1.6-bn (Euro 1.5-bn) in the company.

MMA produced at Bay City is distributed via a multimodal logistics network covering truck, rail, and inland waterways, supported by tank and transloading terminals across North America.
