Andhra Petrochemicals resumes operations at Vizag oxo-alcohol unit

Andhra Petrochemicals Ltd, an associate company of The Andhra Sugars Ltd, will resume operations at its oxo-alcohol plant in Visakhapatnam with effect from 5th August, the company informed the stock exchange.

Earlier in March, the company had suspended plant operations after Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) halted supply of propylene, the plant’s key raw material, amid the Iran war. The company had said at the time that operations would resume once HPCL restored propylene supply.

The Visakhapatnam facility, built on 75 acres leased from the Visakhapatnam Port Trust adjacent to HPCL’s Visakha Refinery, has an installed capacity of 80,000 tonnes per annum of oxo-alcohols. The refinery is the plant’s principal source of propylene and naphtha.

Oxo-alcohols are utilized in the manufacture of plasticisers to the automotive and construction sectors, besides serving as intermediates to paints, coatings and lubricants. Iso-butanol, among the grades produced at the plant, also finds consumption in the medical and pesticide industries.

Andhra Petrochemicals competes with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd in the domestic oxo-alcohol market, besides facing competition from imports and substitute items.
