Recently, Nepal's Ministry of Agriculture, Forests and Environment officially announced a new round of fertilizer import plans. It intends to import a cumulative total of approximately 210,000 tons of fertilizer before mid-August to fully guarantee the domestic fertilizer supply for the rice planting season and consolidate the foundation of grain production. Currently, the department has officially initiated multi-channel fertilizer import processes, advancing procurement, coordination, and entry-related tasks in a categorized manner.
According to information disclosed by officials, this fertilizer import adopts a dual-track model featuring both intergovernmental agreement procurement and global open tender procurement. The categories focus primarily on urea and diammonium phosphate (DAP), which are rigid demands to agricultural production. The total allocation is clear, and the supply is highly targeted.
Specifically, Nepal will import 30,000 tons of urea from India through a government-to-government (G2G) cooperation agreement in the first week of August. This batch of fertilizer will be prioritized to major domestic rice-producing areas to prompt fill seasonal gaps in fertilizer application.
In addition, Nepal is procuring 180,000 tons of fertilizer from multiple countries through global open tendering, accounting to over 80% of the total import volume. The categories of fertilizer procured through this tender are clearly defined, including 60,000 tons of diammonium phosphate and 120,000 tons of urea. These two types of fertilizer will enter the country in batches successively to complete the overall fertilizer demand to nationwide rice planting.
Rice is Nepal's core food crop. The stable fertilizer supply during the annual summer planting season is immediately related to the annual grain yield and food security. By importing fertilizer in bulk through multiple channels, Nepal is precisely aligning with agricultural timing needs, avoiding supply risks through diversified procurement methods, and going all out to ensure the orderly conduct of rice planting, thereby building a solid material guarantee to stabilizing domestic agricultural production and ensuring food self-sufficiency.
