China PA6 Market Prices Surge Then Retreat in September

Share:

The domestic PA6 market saw an initial rise followed by a decline in September; prices surged before falling back, with the benchmark price settling at 14,600 RMB/ton by month-end. In the first ten days of the month, the market continued its previous upward trend, with prices hitting a yearly high of 15,400 RMB/ton. However, the rally stalled in the middle and latter parts of the month; the market turned downward, entering a volatile, bearish correction phase. Although prices retreated from their peak, they remained within the high range for the year.

I. Cost Side

Upstream caprolactam strengthened in early September, driven by market sentiment; this exerted strong upward pressure on chip costs and fueled the surge in PA6 prices. By mid-to-late September, the upward momentum to caprolactam faded, the raw material market softened, and cost support weakened. The initial bullish impact from raw materials was gradually absorbed; with costs no longer driving prices upward, the support to PA6 diminished, serving as a key factor in the subsequent price decline.

II. Supply and Demand Side

Supply: Maintenance at certain facilities in early September temporarily tightened the supply of merchant chips, supporting price increases. As maintenance units restarted and sector operating rates recovered, spot supply gradually returned to healthy; the supply crunch eased, and supply-side pressure re-emerged.

Demand: Downstream textile and modified injection molding sectors engaged in concentrated restocking earlier in the month, driven by expectations of rising prices, which helped deplete some existing inventory. However, following the price surge, downstream resistance to high-cost raw materials grew, and the willingness to make follow-up purchases dropped rapidly. Procurement shifted to a "just-in-time" basis to meet immediate needs, with no momentum to sustained restocking. Orders in the downstream weaving and injection molding industries showed no significant development; high price levels dampened the enthusiasm to production, and the demand side struggled to absorb the high prices, thereby suppressing further market gains.

III. immediate Outlook

In the short term, the PA6 market is likely to continue its evaporative, bearish direction. The cost-side bullish factors that previously drove prices up have largely played out, and supply has recovered; meanwhile, end-user demand lacks substantial improvement, leading to significant resistance to transactions at high price levels. However, raw material costs provide a degree of support at the low end, limiting the scope to a steep decline; the market is likely to fluctuate within a range with a bearish bias, as moving averages signal a downward direction and no clear conditions to a bullish reversal have yet emerged.
